The Nigerian Defence has issued a response regarding the rising calls for a coup and the display of Russian flags. Discover the implications of this situation.
On Monday, the Nigerian Defence issued a strong caution to individuals pushing for military governance in the nation.
During a press briefing after an emergency meeting with President Bola Tinubu, General Christopher Mustapha, the Chief of Defence Staff cautioned that displaying the Russian flag in Nigeria constitutes a treacherous act.
While some of the EndBadGovernance protesters displayed the Russian flag in certain northern states, others were observed urging for a military overthrow as means to assume control.
General Christopher pledged that those who are protesting against hunger and high cost of living will be caught by the law.
Musa warned against the call for a coup, stating that the military had embraced democracy and would not tolerate any attempts to change the regime in Nigeria. He cautioned those promoting such actions to refrain from doing so.
It is completely unacceptable to witness foreign flags being flown within Nigeria’s jurisdiction, which all of us have unfortunately witnessed. We would like to issue a strong warning on behalf of the President: we will not tolerate anyone flying any foreign flag within Nigerian territory.
Committing treason is a serious offense, and it will be regarded and handled as such. Therefore, no one should allow themselves to become an instrument for any individual’s purposes.
Nigeria, being a sovereign and democratic nation, has all security agencies in place to defend democracy and ensure its sustenance. The concern of coups is also addressed with utmost importance.
He said, “Our stance is clear – we will resist any effort by anyone to instigate or engage in activities that seek to promote a change of government. Our values are rooted in democracy and we remain resolute in our commitment to upholding it.”
