A proud moment for Nigeria as a Nigerian-born doctor achieves a historic milestone, being elected as the leader of the Canadian Medical Association, symbolizing excellence and global recognition.
Dr. Bolu Ogunyemi, originally from Nigeria and serving as a clinical associate professor of medicine at Memorial University of Newfoundland, has been appointed as the president-elect of the Canadian Medical Association (CMA).
The announcement on the CMA’s website emphasizes Dr. Ogunyemi’s significant contributions as a practicing dermatologist in St. John’s, Newfoundland, and his role as a visiting specialist in Labrador City since 2018. His election occurred following a voting period from November 20 to December 4.
Dr. Ogunyemi triumphed over Dr. Susan MacDonald, a renowned supporter of palliative care, in an election determined by CMA members from Newfoundland and Labrador.
Looking back on his accomplishment, Dr. Ogunyemi commented, “My 15 years in medical leadership have provided me with crucial insights into the urgent challenges confronting our healthcare system. As CMA president-elect, I am committed to promoting a united profession, strengthening the healthcare system, and fostering healthier communities.”
His appointment is set to be finalized at the CMA’s Annual General Meeting in May 2025, after which he will officially assume the role of president-elect. Dr. Ogunyemi is scheduled to commence his one-year presidency in May 2026.
