Nigerian Army to improve relations with Turkey in the fight against terrorism

As part of efforts to combat terrorism, the Nigerian Army and its Turkish counterpart agreed to boost their bilateral ties through their respective Defence Industrial Corporations.

The pledge was made public on Thursday when the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, visited the Turkish Ambassador to Nigeria, Hidayet Bayraktar, at Army Headquarters, Abuja.

This was said in a statement released on Thursday in Abuja by Brig.-Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, director of Army Public Relations.

Turkish Ambassador Bayraktar stated that both Turkey and Nigeria faced security issues, particularly those related to international terrorism, and that the two nations had many things in common.

He asserted that the cooperation of the two nations would surely stop terrorist activity in each nation.

He declared that Turkey and Nigeria would work together to combat terrorism and insurgency in the fields of defence technology and the economy.

Lt.-Gen. Lagbaja, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), expressed his appreciation for the friendly ties that exist between the Nigerian Army and Turkish Defence Industries and other organisations, particularly in the areas of the purchase of defence equipment and the evacuation of people for medical treatment in Turkey.

According to Lagbaja, the Nigerian army recently acquired new combat enablers to improve its current operations.

He expressed hope that by exchanging operational knowledge and intelligence, the two nations’ partnership will improve the capabilities of their armed forces. (NAN)
