The Nigerian Army has started a verification and screening process for the children of heroes.

For the 2022–2023 academic year, the Nigerian Army has begun the verification and screening process for children of deceased heroes. It has also promised to support their welfare and education.

When handing over control to the new acting director of defence information on Tuesday, Major General Jimmy Akpor, director of personnel services for the Army, and the recently outgoing director, said as much.

He stated that the Department of Army Administration will be conducting a verification and screening exercise for potential beneficiaries of Nigerian Army Scholarships in the 2022–2023 academic session spanning primary, secondary, and tertiary education. This is in relation to the Spirit of the Armed Forces Remembrance Day Celebration in particular, concerning the welfare of the families of our fallen heroes. Among other obligations, one of my responsibilities will be to look out for the education and general welfare of the families of our slain heroes.

He stated, “The verification exercise is from January 17 to February 17, 2023.”
Due to military action and other national power factors, he stated, social and economic life in the North East has essentially returned. He also said that the harvest was good in 2022 and that Maiduguri had its first Independence Day parade in 13 years during the same month.

While acknowledging that the media had been fantastic allies of the military during his administration, General Akor emphasised that this was due to their level of comprehension rather than a lack of uncomfortable news stories.

He claimed that these issues are “mostly borne out of misunderstanding of what we do, but because we reached a level of deeper understanding of what the responsibilities of the military and the media are, to inform, educate, and entertain the society, which of course includes informing the public about the activities of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.”

During his speech, Brigadier General Gusau requested the media’s assistance in the fight against criminal groups.

He claimed that the media continued to play a crucial role in all facets of the growth of the country.

He consequently asked journalists to act professionally in their capacities as representatives of the many media organisations across the nation and abroad, particularly when it comes to issues involving our national security.

“The power of your pen can go a long way in discovering solutions to some of the security concerns our brave warriors are currently reducing,” he said. I beg you to make sure that the Nigerian military can do their constitutional jobs without anyone getting in the way.

“As we work to support other government agencies to ensure peaceful and credible elections across the country, I implore you to avoid reports that could harm the morale of our brave soldiers and the credibility of our Armed Forces as the nation gradually approaches the upcoming general elections starting next month.” The AFN will be pleased to help you carry out your responsibilities as partners in progress.
