The Nigerian Army has declared 44 soldiers wanted for desertion in Borno State amid ongoing security challenges. Discover the details surrounding the case and its implications for military operations in the region.

The Nigerian Army has announced that 44 soldiers, previously deployed to combat Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists in Borno State, are now considered deserters.

These soldiers, stationed at the 403 Amphibious Brigade (AMPH BDE) in the Baga community and part of Sector 3 of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) in Nigeria, have allegedly been absent without leave since October 31, 2024.

To prevent desertion, the Army has frozen the bank accounts of those personnel involved.

A military communication, dated November 1 and signed by Major H.O. Akoh on behalf of the Commander of the 403 Amphibious Brigade, declared that the soldiers were deserters and cautioned that they would face severe repercussions if captured.

The 403 AMPH Brigade in Baga, a vital component of Nigeria’s efforts against terrorism, had expected the soldiers to report for duty by late October.

Additionally, Reference C also issued a reminder about their original request to submit the report no later than October 31, 2024. However, they remain absent. In light of this situation, I have been instructed to respectfully ask you to declare them AWOL effective November 1, 2024.

“I request that you instruct HQ NAFC to freeze their salary account as needed. Additionally, please inform NAIC and NACMP to detain them if found and ensure they are brought under military escort for disciplinary action. Attached in Annex A is the list of soldiers assigned to the 403 Amphibious Brigade (Rear).”
