Nigeria Won’t Tolerate Disrespect Over Canada Visa Denial – Defence Chief

Nigeria’s Defence Chief strongly reacts to Canada’s visa denials, stating that the country will not accept any form of disrespect from foreign nations.

General Christopher Musa, the Chief of Defence Staff, has asserted that Nigeria will not tolerate any form of disrespect from other nations. He emphasized the importance of upholding Nigeria’s sovereignty and dignity on the international stage.

At the Defence Headquarters in Abuja, Musa addressed claims that Nigerian armed forces were intentionally left out of the Invictus Games held in Vancouver, Canada. He made these remarks shortly after welcoming wounded military personnel returning from the event.

He made these remarks in the context of increasing concerns regarding how foreign governments are treating Nigerian officials.

According to Platinumpost, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu recently criticized the Canadian High Commission in Abuja for reportedly refusing visas to the Defence Chief and other senior military officers needed for attending the games.

Offering insight into the events leading up to the program, Musa mentioned that they adhered to all necessary procedures and ensured awareness among all relevant government officials.

Regarding the visa denial issue, it needs to be addressed. Nigeria is a suitable place for everyone involved. We were invited based on an agreement with them and had received the program details; we adhered to all requirements and followed the proper process.

“Everyone is aware that members of the Armed Forces never take shortcuts. The Foreign Affairs Minister, State Minister, National Security Advisor—all were informed about this journey and we adhered to the established process.”

For reasons only they know, the majority of the team members were denied visas. You might recall that even the team captain couldn’t go, nor was the medical doctor present. The physiotherapist wasn’t allowed to travel either. Crucial personnel for the team weren’t granted visas, which raises a significant question: why?

I’m pleased to see that the federal government is considering these aspects. It’s crucial for everyone to recognize that, as Nigerians globally, we are entitled to respect. We should never tolerate disrespect from anyone because our country stands strong and proud.

To our indigenous participants, you have made Nigeria proud. Your bravery and determination have left a lasting impression on everyone who has observed your journey. You are the true embodiment of the Indigenous spirit: unconquered, unbroken, and unstoppable.

Musa assures that injured, retired soldiers will not be neglected.

Continuing his remarks, Musa clarified that military officers who have undergone amputations or suffered other deformities will not be abandoned, contrary to what some may believe.

While we celebrate our team’s achievements, let’s also honor the sacrifices made by all of our former service members in their duties.

Let’s carry on honoring the sacrifices made for our country by dedicating resources to support their well-being and successful reintegration into civilian life.

As the Chief of the Defense Staff, I see this as a crucial call to action. We are committed to doing whatever it takes—and at any cost—to boost our troops’ morale. By demonstrating our dedication to caring for those who are injured, we aim to inspire all soldiers to give their best effort, knowing they too will be supported if anything happens.

I’ve received comments from people, mostly stemming from a lack of understanding about why we’re withdrawing troops. I can’t help but wonder: if you witness the sacrifices made by those who have served—those who’ve lost their lives or endured amputations—and still believe it’s not important to care for them, then your perspective needs re-evaluation.

“The other countries that dispatched their own did so not merely out of desire but because they understood its significance. Similarly, when we attend school, it’s important to engage deeply with our studies and let the educational experience shape us.”
