President Bola Tinubu and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) have been forewarned by the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) against intervening militarily in the Niger Republic.
ACF forewarned that Nigeria would suffer as a result of military action in the Niger Republic.
Murtala Aliyu, the General Secretary of the Forum, encouraged the ECOWAS to hold talks with the conspirators of the coup in the Niger Republic.
Using military force in the Niger Republic will not ensure peace and stability in the ECOWAS subregion, according to a statement by Aliyu.
The unfolding events in Nigeria’s close neighbour, the Republic of Niger, and their possible effects on the area, however, are being watched with alarm by ACF, according to Aliyu.
The proposed actions should have balanced the negative effects of using military force against the historical precedents, shared interests, and other relevant factors between the two nations.
The military option shouldn’t be a requirement for Nigeria’s and the Community’s ongoing efforts to enshrine democracy in the region in the twenty-first century, even though the ACF acknowledges the ECOWAS position to apply pressure to the criminals.
“A military intervention would produce a short-term fix, but the consequences for Nigeria as a regional leader and the organisation would have a detrimental influence on future ties and be extremely difficult to repair.
In order to resolve the current impasse in Niger, the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, chaired by the capable President Bola Tinubu, is urged to follow the path of dialogue and diplomacy rather than use force. This is done in the interest of promoting peace with our neighbour and the stability of the ECOWAS region.
