The Nigerian Golden Eaglets will play South Africa’s Amajimbos in the U-17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with the goal of securing a spot in the quarterfinals. The Nigerians are now second on the log with three points.
The team led by coach Nduka Ugbade was devastated after Wednesday’s 0-1 defeat to Morocco in their second Group B match.
Even though they controlled the game and squandered a few opportunities, an early own goal put an end to their day.
Morocco strategically controlled the outcome, but we dominated the game, according to the coach. “We made a lot of opportunities, but we also made a few mistakes. The only thing is, we couldn’t convert any of them into goals.”
The Nigerians play South Africa’s Amajimbos in their last group match on Saturday. With three points, they are currently second on the log. Although equal to them, their opponents are behind them due to a worse goal differential.
Ugbade wants his squad to be brutal even though a draw would be sufficient for the West Africans to raise their flag in the upcoming games.
He stated in a pre-match briefing on Friday: “We are prepared for this,” adding that “we have a chance” against the South Africans.
He says that in order to do that, the Golden Eaglets must become more ruthless, adding that although losing to Morocco despite outplaying them, “it is important to correct and ensure we are more efficient in front of goal.”
However, South Africa must also avoid losing in order to advance to the next round of the competition. Like Nigeria, they might advance to the quarterfinals even after losing, making them one of the best losers.
They currently have three points after losing one game and winning another.
Soccer lovers will have to wait till 8:00 pm (WAT) on Saturday to enjoy the South Africa vs. Nigeria U-17 AFCON encounter. The group’s final game is on Saturday.
