Nigeria Remains Haunted by Ahmadu Bello’s Murder in 1966 Coup – Shehu Sani
Shehu Sani reflects on the 1966 coup, stating that the assassination of Ahmadu Bello and other leaders continues to cast a long shadow over Nigeria’s political history and unity.
Former Kaduna Central Senator Shehu Sani states that Nigeria has not yet recovered from the assassination of Sir Ahmadu Bello, the former Premier of Northern Nigeria, and others.
In a social media post on Wednesday, Sani referred to Bello’s murder and the killings of others during the 1966 military coup as the origin of an ongoing evil that still plagues Nigeria.
As Sani states, Bello dedicated himself entirely to his people and the nation yet passed away without material wealth.
For those of us in Kaduna, where the Late Premier of Northern Nigeria lived, led, and was tragically murdered, we have yet to find any house, vehicle or company associated with his name or that of his family members.
After his death, his belongings were brought to his family home in Sokoto. The late Sardauna devoted himself entirely to serving both his people and country, ultimately passing away with few material possessions.
He tweeted, “The murders in 1966 planted a seed of evil that still haunts our country. May the souls of all the victims from the 1966 coup rest in peace. Ameen.”
According to DAILY POST, Bello, widely recognized as the Sardauna of Sokoto, was a prominent northern politician during the 1960s. He served as the Northern Region’s inaugural and sole Premier from 1954 until his assassination in 1966.
