The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) expresses confidence that Nigeria will emerge as a global superpower in military equipment production within a few years, citing ongoing efforts and investments in the defense sector.

General Christopher Musa, the Chief of Defence Staff, mentioned during his appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday that within a few years, the military is poised to become a superpower in manufacturing military equipment.

“Occasionally, we experience progress only to see it diminish. However, with the recent signing of the DICON Bill, we’re committed to ensuring lasting success. There’s significant interest and involvement from people and numerous partners are joining us in this endeavor. I am confident that within a few years, Nigeria will emerge as a leader in producing its own equipment,” stated the CDS.

He mentioned that the military previously manufactured some of its weapons at the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON), but this production has declined over time.

Despite the setback, General Musa conveyed optimism about resuming military equipment production, stating that the Nigerian military is now directly manufacturing small-caliber weapons.

He mentioned, “We used to assemble guns from DICON but had discontinued; however, the process is being revived. We now produce our own ammunition. Specifically, we manufacture small caliber 7.62mm and also 9mm rounds.”

“We aim to work on the 5.6 caliber first, followed by advancing to higher calibers of 12.7 and above. Interestingly, Nigeria’s DICON was established 60 years ago last year—just like Brazil’s counterpart—but while Brazil has made significant progress in producing unmanned aircraft and submarines, we aspire to reach similar achievements.”

General Musa stated that the local production of military equipment would create employment opportunities for young people and enhance the country’s foreign exchange.

He mentioned that producing equipment locally would allow the Nigerian military to sell to neighboring countries and generate funds for their operations.

Following the Federal High Court in Abuja’s decision on Friday to ban the Lakurawa sect and designate it as a terrorist organization, the Chief of Defence Staff stated that this provides the military with “legal backing” to actively eliminate them.

He mentioned that certain foreign-purchased weapons, such as the Super Tucano, have limitations on where they can be deployed. However, with the designation of the group as terrorists, these weapons are now permissible for use against them.
