According to Senator Ahmad Lawan, a former president of the Senate, Nigeria’s adherence to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations will aid in efforts to combat poverty and the effects of climate change-related natural catastrophes.
According to a UN estimate, flooding in Nigeria alone caused at least 662 deaths, 3,174 injuries, nearly 2.5 million displaced people, and 200,000 ruined homes in 2022.
In a statement released to mark the 75th anniversary of the United Nations since the UN Charter took effect in 1945, Lawan made his remarks. His media adviser, Ezrel Tabiowo, signed the statement.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), which is this year’s celebration’s topic, is highlighted by the phrase “Equality, Freedom, and Justice for All.”
Lawan asked the Federal Government to continue its support of the SDGs and work with partners, civil society organisations, and individuals to further global progress. He described the UN as an essential forum for multilateral cooperation, advocacy, and action.
According to Senator Lawan, “United Nations Day offers a chance to consider the accomplishments made thus far and the work that still needs to be done.
Therefore, I implore the Federal Government of Nigeria to uphold its resolve in supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which establish the global framework for attaining a better future for all.
“The government can address poverty, hunger, climate change, and other critical challenges by achieving the SDGs, leaving no one behind.
“I further urge the Federal Government to maintain its partnerships with non-governmental organisations, civil society groups, and private citizens in order to advance humankind.
We can promote peace and justice for both the present and future generations if we work together to bring about change and create understanding.
