Nigeria is now a participant in the Global Privacy Assembly (GPA).
This is in honour of its groundbreaking contributions to the development of data privacy and protection.
Nigeria’s admission to the esteemed Assembly was heavily influenced by the Nigeria Data Protection Bill, which President Bola Ahmed Tinubu gave his consent to.
Similar to that, the formation of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission as the independent data protection body for Nigeria under the Act was also a significant indicator of how well data protection was being handled in the nation.

During the 45th Global Privacy Assembly Closed Session, which was held in Bermuda from October 15–October 20, 2023, it was decided whether to certify Nigeria.
The goal of the GPA, which was established in 1979, is to offer a global platform for coordinating worldwide efforts to promote data privacy and protection.
130 data protection authorities from various nations are presently members. Some of the nations with DPAs in the Global Privacy Assembly are Canada, Senegal, Germany, the United Kingdom, Spain, South Africa, and Portugal.
The National Commissioner/CEO, NDPC, Dr. Vincent Olatunji, expressed optimism that the Federal Government’s efforts on digital transformation are producing fruitful results after learning that Nigeria had been accepted as a member of the GPA.
He urged all participants in the data processing ecosystem to handle personal data with the utmost care.
He claimed that this would significantly boost confidence and trust in Nigeria’s developing digital economy.
