Director of Defence Media Operations Edward Buba announced on Thursday that Nigerian troops have successfully eliminated 86 terrorists and apprehended 101 others in a series of operations conducted throughout the country over the past week. Major General Buba, speaking to reporters in Abuja, the capital, also revealed that 21 kidnapped hostages were rescued during these raids.
In line with our objectives, our troops have been diligently targeting the terrorist hideouts through aerial attacks over the past week. Additionally, we have deployed significant military force to areas where these terrorists have been taking refuge,” Major General Buba stated, as reported by local media.
The military spokesperson highlighted that the troops have seized illegal weapon stockpiles, which included “65 AK47 rifles, one HK G3 dun, one G3 rifle, 8 locally fabricated guns,” and various other firearms.
Major General Buba assured that the army will continue its relentless efforts to dismantle illegal armed groups throughout 2024, demolishing their strongholds. He also urged citizens to provide valuable information to support the operations of the security forces.
For the past 14 years, Northeast Nigeria has been grappling with a jihadist insurgency. According to AfricaNews, militant groups have claimed the lives of at least 40,000 individuals since 2009, with two million people being displaced as a result.
