Nigeria’s immigration authorities are investigating a woman for destroying her husband’s passport at Lagos Airport, an incident that has drawn significant attention and prompted official scrutiny.

An investigation has been requested by the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) regarding an incident that occurred at Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos, where a video was captured showing a woman ripping up a Nigerian passport.

Mrs. Favour Igiebor, as identified by local media reports, was caught on video confessing to destroying her husband’s passport. Although she owned up to the offense, airport officials did not take any action against her and instead let her depart with both of her children.

In a statement released on Sunday, August 11th, Kenneth Udo, the spokesperson for NIS verified the occurrence and reported that Mrs. Igiebor had been summoned to undergo further investigation by K.N. Nandap, Comptroller General of Immigration.

The Immigration Act 2015 would be breached if the allegations against her are proven true, according to NIS. This breach could result in legal ramifications. The agency has stressed its dedication towards enforcing the law and safeguarding national security.

What stance does Nigerian law take regarding this matter?

Section 10(b) of the Immigration Act 2015 clearly defines intentional passport destruction as a severe offense under the law.

Section 10(h) of the Act specifies that violators will face penalties, such as fines or imprisonment, for any actions deemed inconsistent with the law. The details surrounding these consequences are clearly defined within this section.

Legal consequences, such as fines, imprisonment or other penalties established by a court of law may be imposed upon an individual found guilty of damaging a passport.
