A legal framework for the protection of personal data and the practice of data protection in Nigeria is provided by the Nigeria Data Protection Act, which was passed in 2023.
This was stated by Dr. Vincent Olatunji, the National Commissioner of the Nigerian Data Protection Bureau (NDPB), at the validation workshop for the NDPD Strategic Roadmap and Action Plan (SRAP), according to NAN.
On Tuesday, April 4, 2023, former President Muhammadu Buhari forwarded a letter containing the bill to the Senate and House of Representatives for review and approval.
“Now an Act, the new law establishes the Nigeria Data Protection Commission and replaces the NDPB established by former President Buhari in February 2022,” he stated.
A National Commissioner will serve as the organization’s head, and their job will be to oversee the handling of personal data.
