Nigeria/Benin are leading the battle for the 2027 AFCON as Algeria withdraws
The joint bid between Nigeria and its neighbour, the Benin Republic, is anticipated to be successful in winning the right to host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
On Wednesday, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) will announce the host countries for the 2025 and 2027 Africa Cup of Nations finals.
At a meeting scheduled to take place at the Marriott Hotel in Cairo’s Zamalek neighbourhood, the CAF Executive Committee will cast votes on the AFCON bids for the years 2025 and 2027.
The finals will undoubtedly be held in Morocco in 2025.
For the 2027 tournament, Senegal, Egypt, Botswana, and a tripartite alliance of Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania are competing against Nigeria and the Republic of Benin’s joint proposal.
Prior to its withdrawal from the race on Tuesday morning, Algeria was a promising prospect for the event in 2027.
In addition to the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abuja, Nigeria has also proposed the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt, the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos, the Ahmadu Bello Stadium in Kaduna, the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba, the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City, and the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano.
There are two stadiums listed in the Republic of Benin: Stade Mathieu Kerekou in Cotonou and Stade Charles de Gaulle in Porto Novo.
