As Nigeria celebrates its 64th Independence anniversary, Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang made a notable gesture by granting pardons to five prison inmates.
In a statewide broadcast on Tuesday, the governor emphasized the crucial role of peace, unity, and compassion in addressing the nation’s ongoing challenges.
Governor Mutfwang stated that the inmates granted pardons had demonstrated significant improvements in their behavior and conduct, making them deserving of clemency.
He called on citizens to embrace a spirit of forgiveness and unity, emphasizing that these values are crucial for Nigeria’s advancement, especially in these challenging times.
“Fellow citizens, in accordance with my constitutional prerogative of mercy and following the recommendations from the Plateau State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy, I have decided to grant pardon to five individuals. These persons have served various prison sentences and shown remarkable good conduct over time,” he announced.

Mutfwang called on Nigerians to stay hopeful and steadfast in their commitment to creating a united and peaceful nation that everyone can be proud of.
The governor stated, “Today, we celebrate the significant day when we achieved sovereignty and began our path to self-determination and nationhood.”
This day is deeply significant for every Nigerian, as it reminds us of our common destiny and the resilient spirit that has united us through both challenges and victories.
We are deeply grateful to the courageous men and women who fought for our independence, as well as to the founding fathers whose vision established the foundation of a united Nigeria.
He noted, “This year’s Independence celebration comes at a time when we are grappling with economic hardship, insecurity, and criminal activities that bring immense suffering to many throughout the nation.”
Mutfwang recognized the daily hardships faced by the people of Plateau State and Nigerians as a whole, assuring them that he empathizes with their suffering.
He stated, “I support you during these challenging times and am dedicated to identifying lasting solutions that will provide relief. We are actively developing policies and programs in crucial areas like agriculture, transportation, education, healthcare, and economic development to mitigate the effects of the economic downturn.”
Although these solutions may require time, I ask for your patience and understanding as we put measures in place to mitigate the impact of this crisis. The path to recovery is challenging, but together, we will overcome it.
My team and I are unwavering in our commitment to transform Plateau State. We must restore the eroded foundations and forge a new path forward. This is a serious pledge, and you can rely on us.
The governor additionally encouraged the citizens to continue having confidence in the government’s initiatives.
He declared, “Our dedication to restoring security and peace across every region of our state remains unwavering. Our security agencies are working tirelessly, and significant progress is being achieved in the battle against insecurity.”
