Former Gabonese President Ali Bongo was released from house detention by the military regime.
The President of Gabon, who was duly elected, is free to travel abroad for medical care, according to the country’s new military government.
When the country’s electoral umpire declared that Bongo had won a third term in power, the government was overthrown.
Brice Nguema, the army commander who led the coup, was inaugurated as the acting president.
Bongo’s late father employed Nguema, a relative, as a bodyguard.
Additionally, he oversaw the republican guard, the nation’s most prestigious military force.
Bongo’s release from house detention was declared in a statement that was signed by Nguema.
The military’s spokesperson, Ulrich Manfoumbi, claimed in the statement that Ali Bongo Ondimba, the former president of the Republic, is able to move around given his health.
He could go abroad for medical exams if he so desired, the man said.
