With broad support from WTO members, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala announces her bid for a second term as Director-General. As the sole candidate, she aims to continue her mission of reforming global trade policies and promoting economic equity.

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the current Director General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), has expressed her intention to pursue a second term.

To achieve this goal, Okonjo-Iweala became the only candidate for the WTO Director-General position.

The organization officially initiated the procedure to appoint its next Director General on October 8.

The WTO gave members until November 8 to submit their nominations.

This was revealed in a message to members by Petter Olberg, the Chairman of the WTO General Council.

Olberg stated that no further nominations were submitted by the deadline of November 8.

According to the procedures for appointing Directors-General (WT/L/509), I must inform members of a consolidated list of candidates received for the Director-General position immediately after nominations close, which in this case is 8 November 2024.

I’d like to inform the members that by the close of the nomination period, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, who currently serves as director-general, was the sole candidate for this position.
