The Nigeria Football Federation(NFF) technical committee is set to convene today in Abuja to deliberate on the appointment of the next coach for the Super Eagles, with Emmanuel Amuneke being considered alongside three other foreign tacticians.
Despite initial reports suggesting that the committee would meet yesterday, a reliable source from SCORENigeria has hinted that the delay in appointing a substantive coach for the Super Eagles is due to the NFF’s efforts to navigate the various interests vying for influence in this crucial decision-making process.
The NFF leadership is acutely aware that the outcome of their tenure will hinge significantly on the performance of the new coach, especially in terms of securing qualification for the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
The previous administration departed following the Super Eagles’ failure to qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Former NFF president Amaju Pinnick has publicly endorsed Finidi George as the ideal candidate for the position, while influential figures, including a former 80s international, have thrown their support behind Emmanuel Amuneke.

There is a growing chorus of voices advocating for the NFF to consider hiring another foreign coach with a proven track record, one who can immediately command the respect of the Super Eagles players.
Reports suggest that a majority of the NFF technical committee members lean towards appointing a foreign coach, although their role is purely advisory, as the final decision rests with the NFF executive committee.
Former Super Eagles defender George Abbey recently sparked controversy by expressing doubts about the ability of local coaches to manage the egos of the Super Eagles stars.
A senior NFF official has also highlighted concerns about the lack of discipline within the Super Eagles squad, emphasizing the urgent need for a coach who can instill order and discipline among the players.
