The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has announced that they will be recruiting an expatriate technical adviser for the Super Eagles following their disappointing performance in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. Out of the four games played in the qualification series, Nigeria has failed to secure a victory, with their most recent defeat being a shocking loss to the Benin Republic. This outcome has led to a backlash from fans, who are now calling for Finidi George to be removed from his position.
In a communique released on Thursday after a meeting, the NFF stated that the appointment of the technical adviser will be made in the upcoming weeks. They also expressed their apologies to the Super Eagles’ fans for the team’s recent poor performances. The NFF’s Executive Committee held a meeting on June 12th, 2024, where they discussed important matters concerning Nigerian football. During this meeting, they acknowledged the team’s underwhelming results and promised to work diligently to ensure a better-prepared squad for the AFCON 2025 qualifiers in September and the resumption of the World Cup qualifiers in March 2025.
In addition to the above, the Executive Committee has decided to employ an expatriate Technical Adviser for the Super Eagles in the near future, ahead of the AFCON qualifiers and the remaining FIFA World Cup qualifying matches.
However, it remains uncertain what role Finidi will have within the Super Eagles moving forward.
The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) also conveyed its dissatisfaction with the negative behavior exhibited by certain players towards their national duties. Consequently, the NFF unanimously agreed to implement a comprehensive scouting program to identify exceptional Nigerian players from all corners of the world, who possess the potential to greatly contribute to the success of the national team.
In addition to their focus on the Super Eagles, the NFF pledged its full support to the Super Falcons as they gear up for the upcoming Olympics, scheduled to be held in France from 24th July to 11th August.
