Iran releases new information about the assassination of a Hamas chief. Discover the details and implications of this revelation.
According to the IRGC, Ismail Haniyeh was targeted in a lethal assault carried out by means of a “short-range weapon that had an approximately seven-kilogram warhead.”
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) of the country has asserted that Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh perished due to an explosion caused by a limited-range object, while holding Israel and the US responsible for his killing.
The IRGC issued a statement on Saturday alleging that the Zionist regime was behind the fatal assault on Haniyeh in Tehran last week. They further claimed that America’s criminal government supported this attack. The IRGC, which is an influential and elite division of the Iranian military, made these claims publicly.
Israel has made repeated promises to eradicate Hamas’ fighters amid the ongoing bloodshed in Gaza, though West Jerusalem hasn’t revealed any involvement. Antony Blinken, US Secretary of State clarified that his administration lacked knowledge or participation regarding the assassination.
According to the IRGC, their investigation revealed that a short-range projectile with a seven-kilogram warhead was fired from outside of Haniyeh’s residence during the terrorist operation.
According to Middle Eastern officials, the New York Times reported on Thursday that Haniyeh was assassinated with a bomb remotely detonated inside his guesthouse approximately two months before his demise.
The security situation in the Middle East, which was already tense, has been made worse by the assassination. In October of last year, Hamas militants launched a surprise attack on Israel that resulted in an extensive military operation and caused numerous deaths as well as widespread devastation within the enclave.
After the killing, Iran has promised to impose severe consequences on Israel. Consequently, Israel’s military is prepared for a possible attack while their main supporter – the US – declared its intention of sending further military resources to the area.
When Israel and Iran last experienced a grave escalation in April, Israeli targets were attacked by Tehran using missiles and drones. Officials based in West Jerusalem insist that the attack caused minimal damage.
