With Brigadier Oluyede now at the helm as Acting Army Chief, he seeks the nation’s prayers for Major General Lagbaja. Find out more about his immediate plans for the army.
In a landmark development, President Bola Tinubu appointed Maj.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede as the Acting Chief of Army Staff (COAS), and he officially began his duties on Wednesday.
For the first time in Nigerian Army history, an officer has been appointed to temporarily fill the role of Chief of Army Staff (COAS) while Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja is on medical leave overseas.
At the handover ceremony, Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Christopher Musa highlighted the importance of Oluyede’s appointment, stating that this interim leadership is a groundbreaking move for the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
“The event today is unprecedented in the history of the armed forces,” said Musa. He further added, “Our brother and friend has gone for a medical check-up, and we sincerely hope he takes this time to recover fully before returning.”
Musa stated that, as per President Tinubu’s orders, Oluyede has been given complete authority to lead the army.
“Considering the challenges our country faces and the insight of the President, Commander-in-Chief, we are today granting full control and command of the Nigerian Army to the Acting Chief of Army Staff,” he said.
Musa further clarified that the appointment is in accordance with the Armed Forces Act, which permits temporary leadership during exceptional situations as outlined in Parts 7, Sections 18 (1-4) of Cap A-20 of the Laws of the Federation 2004.
In his acceptance speech, Maj.-Gen. Oluyede conveyed his appreciation to President Tinubu and pledged to fully commit himself to the duties of the position. He added, “As we enter this distinct phase, I urge everyone to keep praying for Lt.-Gen. TA Lagbaja’s swift recovery and safe return so he can complete his career journey.”
Oluyede also promised to uphold the command focus set by Lagbaja and called for unified support in tackling the country’s security issues.
“We strive to collaborate in restoring peace and fostering prosperity throughout our nation,” Oluyede concluded.
