Senator Ali Ndume states that the National Assembly can reject President Tinubu’s tax bills without in-depth study, stirring debate on legislative processes. Learn more about the controversy surrounding this stance.

Borno South Senator Ali Ndume asserts that the National Assembly should reject President Bola Tinubu’s tax reform bills without needing to study them.

remembers that in October, Tinubu requested the National Assembly to review and approve four Tax Reform Bills: the Nigeria Tax Bill, the Tax Administration Bill, and the Joint Revenue Board Establishment Bill.

The Northern States Governors Forum (NSGF) opposed the bills, while the National Economic Council (NEC) recommended that the President withdraw them for further consultations.

Nonetheless, Tinubu stated that the bills would remain in place.

He stated that the National Assembly has the authority to make amendments as they see fit.

During an appearance on Politics Today, a program aired by Channels Television, Ndume mentioned that he had not yet reviewed the tax reform bills.

However, he pointed out that given the current economic situation in the country, the timing of these bills seems illogical to him.

“I can assure you that it will be ineffective from the start. There’s no need for us to review the bill,” he stated.

Generally, Nigerians are currently reluctant to discuss, consider, or pay any taxes given the challenges they have faced recently. This reflects a broader sentiment towards this government of the people.

Currently, people can’t even afford to feed themselves. They are struggling just to survive.

He said, “Allow people to live first before you begin asking them for taxes.”
