NDLEA Seizes UK-Bound Cannabis at Lagos Airport, Arrests ‘Suck and Die’ Dealers in Kano
The NDLEA has intercepted UK-bound cannabis at Lagos airport and apprehended suspects in Kano with the deadly substance known as ‘suck and die,’ in a major anti-drug operation.
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has seized a shipment of cannabis, commonly referred to as “Loud,” hidden in a duvet and intended for the United Kingdom.
The Director of Media and Advocacy for the agency, Femi Babafemi, announced in a Sunday statement that the shipment was discovered on Tuesday at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Ikeja, Lagos.
As per the statement, NDLEA officers apprehended two individuals, Adakole Sunday and Austin Balogun, in relation to the shipment.
“The statement indicated that six packages of the psychoactive substance, with a total weight of 3.50 kilograms, were hidden within the duvet.”
The confession provided more insights into Balogun’s statement. “Austin Balogun, the primary agent responsible for hiring Adakole, admitted in his declaration that he received N700,000 to transport the shipment to the UK. However, he used a small portion of this amount on export handling fees and allocated most of it towards securing an apartment.”
In a connected operation, NDLEA officers conducted a raid on a hideout in Ikorodu, Lagos, where they discovered an arsenal of weapons and a substance referred to as “skuchies.”
“Babafemi stated that two suspects, Joseph OAdewale and Biodun Adelakun, were arrested in the Igbo Olomu area of Ikorodu, Lagos. The arrests occurred when NDLEA operatives raided their hideout within the community, where they recovered seven liters of skuchies—a new psychoactive substance made with black currant, cannabis, and opioids.”
The raid also resulted in the confiscation of firearms, which included three locally crafted double-barrel rifles, a pistol, and multiple cartridges.
In another operation in Mushin on January 19, authorities seized 47 kilograms of skunk, a form of cannabis, along with 25.46 kilograms of Nitrous Oxide, commonly known as laughing gas.
The agency expanded its operations beyond Lagos, leading to the arrest of 26-year-old Adepoju Taiwo in Ekiti State on January 23, with a seizure of 1.95 kilograms of Canadian Loud. In another incident on January 20, NDLEA operatives detained Auwal Sani in Kwara State and confiscated 50,000 tramadol pills weighing a total of 36.56 kilograms.
In Kano State, officers apprehended three suspects: Abubakar Lami, 45; Abba Sani, 35; and Auwal Aliyu, 32. They seized a total of 13.1 kilograms of skunk and 125 liters of “suck and die,” a new psychoactive substance. Additionally, law enforcement dismantled a cannabis farm in the Dawakin Kudu council area and arrested another suspect identified as Sabo Ali Muhammad, age 45.
