President Bola Tinubu announced on Wednesday that the military personnel who were killed in Okuama, a community in Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State, will receive national honours.

Speaking at the breaking of the Ramadan fast in Abuja, President Tinubu emphasized the importance of oversight in maintaining transparency and accountability in governance. However, he cautioned against excessive summoning of officials, as it can disrupt operations and hinder service delivery to citizens.

The President expressed his condolences to the military and the families of the deceased, assuring them that the victims will receive a dignified burial.

He urged lawmakers to exercise discretion in their oversight functions and highlighted the progress being made by the country. President Tinubu also commended the National Assembly for their collaboration with the executive, resulting in the swift passage of bills to improve the welfare of Nigerians.

He encouraged legislators to remember their constituencies and use the holy month of Ramadan as an opportunity to show compassion and support to the less privileged in society.

Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, expressed concern about potential reprisals from the military and the escalating tension following the brutal killings.

To address these issues, he met with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. Governor Oborevwori informed the President about the efforts being made to maintain peace and emphasized that both he and the President condemn the killings of the officers and soldiers who were on a peace mission.

The Governor assured everyone that there would be no further attacks on the villages, except for those responsible for the violence. President Tinubu, in his message, also condemned the killings and pledged that the perpetrators, whom he described as “cowardly,” would not escape punishment. As the Commander-in-Chief, he expressed his condolences to the families of the fallen soldiers and assured that the military high command was already taking action to address the incident.
