The Student Loan Act has to be changed, according to the National Association of Nigerian Students, or NANS.
President Bola Tinubu reportedly signed the legislation governing student loans into law in June, according to OBASANJO NEWS24.
The initiative, which Femi Gbajabiamila, a former speaker of the House of Representatives, supported, was intended to overcome the financial barriers young Nigerians experience in obtaining higher-quality education.
Usman Barambu, president of NANS, asked for the inclusion of student representation on the board while speaking at the legislative summit on student loans and access to higher education that was sponsored by the house ad hoc committee in Abuja on Thursday.
In addition, he demanded that polytechnics and colleges of education be added to the board rather than just the National University Commission (NUC), which had previously been captured.
Student presence on the board is lacking, despite the fact that student loans are for us. The polytechnic and colleges of education, which should both be included for fairness and equity, were left out by the board, which only included NUC.
“The payment system should be changed to four to five years because the majority of students won’t be able to stand on their own two years after graduation.
“Death cases should also take forgiveness into account.”
