The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) suspends its 800% levy hike, averting a potential crisis in the aviation industry.
The proposed 800% hike in navigational fees by the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) has been put on hold.
“The suspension has been instructed by Festus Keyamo, the Minister of Aviation, due to the economic difficulties currently being experienced by Nigerians,” announced Abdullahi Musa from the agency.
The minister stressed the importance of additional consultation before enacting any alterations in a statement released on Monday.
Moreover, Umar Farouk, the head of NAMA, emphasized the notable financial challenges that confront the aviation sector which is further aggravated by worldwide economic unpredictability along with surges in fuel expenses and currency instability.
He discussed plans for survival and expansion, such as improving operational efficiency, adopting innovation and technology, reinforcing infrastructure, and promoting cooperation with partners.
To ensure the safety and efficiency of Nigeria’s airspace, the agency responsible for managing it has proposed a fee increase to sustain its operations.
Starting on September 1, 2024, the unit rate for en-route will escalate from ₦2,000 to ₦18,000 per flight and the minimum charge for terminal navigation charges is expected to rise from ₦6,000 to a new amount of ₦54.00 per flight.
