The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has implemented additional measures to address the problem of unbranded cereals and other large-scale food items.
During a dialogue and feedback session with food manufacturing companies, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, the director general of NAFDAC, expressed concerns about the health risks associated with consuming unbranded milk and cereals due to unsanitary conditions during dispensing. Adeyeye, represented by Mrs. Eva Edwards, the director of Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (FSAN), emphasized the Agency’s dissatisfaction with the widespread availability of bulk food items in the markets, which may originate from manufacturing plants or suppliers. Adeyeye stated that these items enter the country because companies have obtained permits to use them in the production of NAFDAC-registered products.
To address this issue, NAFDAC is now scrutinizing the process of issuing permits for bulk food raw materials and has implemented additional measures to assess and verify the utilization records of companies applying for import permits. NAFDAC aims to have a comprehensive understanding of the imported materials and their usage in order to make informed decisions.
