Several terrorists in the Tumbuns area, near Lake Chad in Borno State were successfully eliminated through airstrikes executed by the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) on Thursday.
The mission aimed at militants who were compelled to move to elevated areas subsequent to their previous hideouts being uncovered due to torrential rains, causing flooding in the region.
The operation that took place was based on Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions conducted during August 22nd to the 26th in the year of 2024. The NAF spokesperson, Air Vice Marshal Edward Gabkwet stated these ISR missions discovered four makeshift shelters hidden by trees and thick vegetation that contained terrorists’ belongings.

Gabkwet stated that the Air Component of Operation Hadin Kai had effectively carried out an air interdiction mission in Jubillaram located in southern Tumbuns. The operation was a strategic hit against terrorist groups remnants situated around Lake Chad region.
The terrorists were forced to relocate to higher ground due to constant rainfall, which left their previous hideouts exposed. Gabkwet stated that the militants’ presence and possessions were verified through ISR missions, paving the way for accurate airstrikes.
He stated that the approved airstrikes had effectively demolished various buildings, including a suspected weapon storage facility or logistics warehouse as evidenced by thick black smoke seen rising from one of the targeted areas. The operation led to neutralizing several terrorists.
The NAF’s dedication to its duty of protecting the country from terrorism is reinforced by the triumph of this mission. Despite adverse weather conditions dispersing the terrorists, prompt and resolute action by the NAF dealt a substantial blow to their endeavours.
Targeting these enclaves has a significant strategic impact, as pointed out by Gabkwet. It disrupts the terrorists’ bases in Maiduguri and diminishes their capacity to carry out attacks, especially on innocent civilians.
He stressed that other terrorist cells operating in the region rely heavily on these enclaves as essential support points.
