Musk permits Trump to return to Twitter
After an online vote, the ex-US president’s ban was lifted.
Elon Musk, the brand-new owner of Twitter, on Saturday lifted Donald Trump’s lifetime ban on the service.
“The people have had their say.
Trump will be re-elected, tweeted Musk.
Vox populi, vox Dei, a Latin expression that translates to “the voice of the people is the voice of God,” was added.
On Friday, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX posted a poll on Twitter asking if Trump’s account should be reinstated.
51.8% of the more than 15 million users who participated in the poll chose “yes,” while 48.2% selected “no.”
Trump said that he will not rejoin Twitter in a post on Truth Social, the website he founded as a result of his Twitter suspension.
“Vote now positively, but don’t be alarmed, we’re staying put.
Truth Social is unique!” he declared.
Shortly after Trump’s followers attacked and temporarily overran the Capitol building in Washington, DC, on January 6, 2021, in an effort to prevent Congress from recognizing Joe Biden’s victory, Twitter, along with Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat, banned him.
At the time, Twitter argued that Trump, who maintained that the election had been rigged against him, was encouraging violence through his postings.
Elon Musk restores a number of prominent Twitter accounts
A few days after publicly declaring that he will run for re-election in 2024, Trump’s reinstatement as president was reported on Twitter.
On Friday, Musk reinstated a number of well-known accounts, including those of author and psychologist Jordan Peterson, actress Kathy Griffin, and parody website The Babylon Bee. The same day, CBS News, a US broadcaster, declared that it will quit using Twitter due to “uncertainty” over the platform’s policy under Musk.
