Recently, Moscow claimed that the delivery would render Washington complicit in the murder of civilians.
According to Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, the US has ‘debased’ itself by providing Ukraine with widely outlawed cluster munitions. Musk also added that the weapons won’t have a substantial influence on the fight.
The billionaire stated this on Twitter on Saturday: “We have run out of normal ammunition to send Ukraine, so now we are sending them cluster bombs in desperation, debasing ourselves with no change to the outcome.”
Musk applauded the efforts of the 49 Democrats and 98 Republicans in the House who voted to prohibit the supply of cluster munitions to Ukraine, but it was ultimately ineffective. He added, “Thank you for attempting to halt this debasement of America.
Earlier this month, the US gave its approval for the sale of cluster munitions to Kiev. President Joe Biden described the action as a stopgap measure to allow military production to keep up with growing demand as both Washington and Kiev are running low on conventional munitions.
More than 100 nations have enacted laws banning the use of cluster munitions because they scatter numerous bomblets over a huge area when they detonate, posing a major risk to civilians for many years after the conflict is finished.
Many of Washington’s longtime friends, including as the UK, Canada, and Germany, have voiced their worries about the choice and stated that they will not supply the contentious weapons to Kiev.
Officials from Russia have denounced the delivery of cluster munitions. As a result, Washington is de facto “an accomplice in mining [Ukraine’s] territory,” according to Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, which means it “will share full responsibility for the deaths… of both Russian and Ukrainian children.” She also cautioned that while the action won’t change the conflict’s outcome, it does make Washington “an accomplice in mining [Ukraine’s] territory.”
