Tech mogul Elon Musk has alleged that the US Democratic Party is attempting to suppress free speech in the nation, under the guise of addressing hate speech and misinformation.

The billionaire remarked after Tuesday’s vice-presidential debate between Democratic candidate and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, and Donald Trump’s running mate, Ohio Senator J.D. Vance. During the debate, they addressed several topics such as free speech and censorship.

During the debate, Walz expressed his belief that hate speech, threatening language, and misinformation are not protected by the First Amendment, which guarantees US citizens the right to free speech.

“You can’t shout ‘fire’ in a crowded theater; that’s the Supreme Court standard,” Walz mentioned, alluding to a 1919 statement by Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes.

On Wednesday, Musk expressed on X that he believes the Democratic Party is openly attempting to restrict freedom of speech by labeling certain expressions as “hate.” As someone who identifies as a free speech absolutist, Musk issued this warning.

During the debate, Vance claimed that censorship by Big Tech companies, backed by Kamala Harris and President Joe Biden, posed a “much bigger threat to democracy than anything we’ve seen in the last four years.” He suggested it was even more significant than the January 6 Capitol Hill riots, which the Democratic Party has frequently highlighted as evidence of a democratic threat from Trump.

Vance stated, “We indeed face a threat to democracy… It’s the large technology companies that are silencing their fellow citizens. Additionally, Kamala Harris has expressed a preference for censoring individuals who spread misinformation rather than engaging in debate and persuading her fellow Americans.”

The Republican vice presidential candidate also claimed that the Biden-Harris administration attempted to have Americans banned from platforms such as Facebook for criticizing government mask mandates for toddlers during the Covid-19 pandemic.

“That’s not the same as shouting ‘fire’ in a crowded theater; it’s about critiquing government policies, which is every American’s right,” Vance contended.

In August, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed that the Biden administration had urged Facebook to “censor” certain Covid-19 content. He also disclosed that the FBI instructed the platform to suppress a New York Post story concerning Hunter Biden’s laptop prior to the 2020 election.
