MTN has introduced innovative, eco-friendly paper-based SIM cards as part of its commitment to sustainability. The new SIMs aim to reduce plastic waste while providing the same reliable service to customers.

As part of its Project Zero initiative aimed at promoting environmental sustainability, MTN Nigeria has launched biodegradable SIM cards made from paper.

The telecommunications giant publicized the decision on Friday, emphasizing that the new SIM cards are designed to lower greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and assist the company in reaching net-zero emissions by 2040.

The company highlighted that paper-based SIM cards are more environmentally friendly compared to traditional plastic ones, supporting waste reduction and circular product management throughout their lifecycle. This move by MTN follows the Nigerian Communications Commission’s (NCC) announcement of plans to revise its corporate governance code, which will include mandatory sustainability reporting for telecom operators.

In a statement, MTN highlighted that eliminating plastic SIM cards will play a crucial role in cutting down plastic pollution. “Our innovative eco-friendly SIM cards exemplify our ongoing commitment to environmental responsibility and waste reduction. They also reflect our support for local Nigerian vendors and the integration of sustainability into both business operations and everyday life,” stated Tobe Okigbo, Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer.

The telecom company assessed the ecological effects of their new biodegradable SIM cards against traditional PVC-based ones. They emphasized that paper-based SIMs decompose naturally and can be recycled, thereby reducing waste and decreasing carbon emissions throughout their lifecycle from production to disposal. This transition also addresses issues associated with plastic waste, including restricted recycling options, landfill buildup, and incineration problems.

In discussing the initiative, Adekemi Adisa, who serves as MTN’s General Manager for Sustainability and Shared Value, stated:

The innovative actions we implement are driven by our people and their environment. The introduction of our recyclable SIM cards reflects our dedication to sustainability, promoting eco-friendly decisions among customers, minimizing waste, and paving the way for a more environmentally aware future in Nigeria.

MTN reiterated that this initiative aligns with its “Doing for the Planet” promise, emphasizing its dedication to incorporating sustainable practices into operations and reducing environmental impact through responsible waste management.
