A significant stride was taken in the battle against mpox when 10,000 doses of Jynneos vaccine were generously contributed by the United States government to Nigeria on Tuesday.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has given its approval to Jynneos for the prevention of smallpox and monkeypox in individuals who are at risk, aged 18 years or older.

At the official handover in Abuja, Prof. Muhammad Pate – Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare acknowledged appreciation to the US government for their contribution.

Pate’s commitment to improving public health in Nigeria was emphasized by Permanent Secretary Daju Kachollom, who also stressed the significance of international cooperation to achieve this goal.

According to Pate, “Our nation’s health is a top priority for the Federal Ministry of Health. The upcoming vaccine will undoubtedly provide immense assistance in our efforts towards maintaining a robust healthcare system and promoting public wellness.” In addition, he appreciated the backing provided by development allies such as UNICEF, WHO, USAID and other UN organizations.

Mpox, an uncommon zoonotic illness caused by the mpox virus of the Orthopoxvirus genus (which encompasses smallpox and vaccinia virus), appears unanticipatedly in outlying Central and West African towns. Since smallpox was eradicated, mpox has emerged as the primary contagion from this category.

A public health emergency of continental security was announced by the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention on August 13, 2024 concerning mpox.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention has reported 40 cases of mpox, confirmed out of a total of 830 suspected cases nationwide as at last Friday.
