Former President Olusegun Obasanjo claimed on Monday that the majority of Nigerian leaders are devoid of education and grasp of the positions they seek.

“You will weep for our nation over their level of emptiness on development issues,” Obasanjo added.

The senior statesman stated that he supports required adjustments, as complete deconstruction would be regressive and dangerous.

While tasked with removing the nation’s barriers, Obasanjo regretted that most of the leaders in positions are eager to assist the nation’s progress.

This was said by the former president in his keynote presentation delivered through video recording at the launch of former minister, Olusegun Aganga’s book, ‘Reclaiming The Jewel of Africa,’ in Abuja.

Obasanjo concurred with the author’s request for improvements in a statement issued by his Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Akinyemi, but added that “total dismantling is destructive and retrogressive.”

He noted that “adequate emphasis is not placed on leadership as the crucial and critical defining and decisive factor in determining the shape, form, direction, speed, content, and trajectory of development for any human organisation, particularly for a nation like Nigeria” in the book.

“Leadership is the key to unlocking and removing the impediment to Nigeria’s attaining divine stature and status and remaining a Lilliputian,” he believes.

“If you ask why they want to be in the position they crave for, you will weep for your nation over their level of emptiness in terms of development issues,” he said of most of the country’s leaders.

“What do they mean by achieving peace, security, stability, predictability, development, growth, and progress?” Peace, security, democracy, and wealth, in my opinion, must all be pursued concurrently.”
