The FG’s approval of an airstrip for Canaanland has sparked both praise and criticism, with opinions divided over its impact on the region.

On Sunday, Bishop David Oyedepo, the founder of Living Faith Church Worldwide (also referred to as Winners Chapel), announced that the Federal Government has approved the construction of an airstrip at Faith Tabernacle in Canaanland, Ota, Ogun State.

The cleric stated that with the new development, he could fly directly from the church premises, removing the necessity of traveling to the airport first.

I’m confident you’ll be pleased to hear that the Federal Government has approved an airstrip for Canaanland.

According to Oyedepo, “I no longer need to fly a helicopter to the airport. I can depart from here for any destination. Members with planes will have a place to land and park.”

In the meantime, Oyedepo’s announcement has ignited responses on social media, with some Nigerians questioning why the Federal Government approved the airstrip.

“Why would the FG even permit him to have an airstrip at his church? Who does he think he is?” tweeted @Atandalukman_.

Another user, @ChrisEjiofor7, remarked, “Wow! This truly feels like heaven on Earth because all the comforts that great men of God have experienced are here now.”

Some individuals voiced worries about the impact on Christianity and societal values. “@Stanzigar commented that these pastors have completely reversed the Christian value system, stating, ‘Jesus is unique as a deity who died in servitude. In contrast, Buddha hailed from wealth and Prophet Muhammad’s wife was affluent. It’s unfortunate!'”

Some people backed the decision, like @_klassy who tweeted: “If this is legal and complies with FAA regulations, as well as environmental and safety standards, it means that many others can benefit from it too. If it’s beneficial to community development, then that’s a good thing. It’s not just pastors enjoying the benefits; they’re simply more visible targets for criticism.”

In a more playful response, @TheUntamable1 commented, “How does one go about getting a private airstrip? It’s on my dream list as well! Congrats, Papa. I’ve fantasized about teaming up with my billionaire friends to build our own mini city and include a private airstrip while we unveil an untouched coastal forest! Dream big!”
