Military says UN equipment and trucks are in Benin but Nigeria is not in danger
The United Nations’ war vehicles and equipment were spotted in Benin, Edo State, according to footage posted on social media. The Nigerian Defense Headquarters has responded.
Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, the acting director of defence information, said in a statement on Tuesday that the sighting has sparked rumours and anxiety.
But, he made it clear that Nigeria provides troops to UN peacekeeping, with the most recent deployment being to the Southern Sudanese UNISFA. Gusau made it clear.
The spokeswoman stated that the UN doesn’t have its own forces and that the operation is led by Major General Benjamin Olufemi Sawyerr of Nigeria.
He clarified that the global organisation frequently gets into agreements with nations to obtain their people and equipment for use in its varied objectives.
“The UN-colored vehicles and equipment are being transported through the Warri Port for delivery to the mission area in Southern Sudan to join our forces inducted into UNISFA last month,” Gusau added.
Nigerians were reassured by the DHQ that there was “no danger to the nation that would call for the deployment of United Nations soldiers on her land.”
