The Nigerian military has confirmed the rise of a new terror group operating in the North-West region, heightening security concerns. Discover more about the group and the military’s response.
The Defence Headquarters has announced the emergence of a new terrorist group called ‘Lukarawas’ in Sokoto and Kebbi, two Northwestern states.
During a news conference in Abuja on Thursday, Major General Edward Buba, the Director of Defence Media Operations, stated that while the new terrorist group is worsening insecurity in the North-West region, the Armed Forces of Nigeria are already taking measures to contain them.
Troops are facing a new terrorist group in the Northwest called the Lukawaras, who are linked to terrorists in the Sahel region, particularly those from Mali and Niger Republic.

“They started their incursion into the northern part of Nigeria, specifically in Sokoto and Kebbi states. As I mentioned before, they entered from the Niger and Mali regions,” stated General Buba.
He mentioned that the new terrorist group originated in Mali and the Republic of Niger after the coup disrupted military cooperation between Nigeria and Niger.
The military has also announced that nine terrorists are wanted in connection with the country’s ongoing security issues.
