A hotel housing asylum seekers in the English town of Rotherham was set ablaze by right-wing protesters amidst ongoing demonstrations against immigration and Islam throughout the country. The Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, has pledged that those involved will be subject to full legal consequences for their actions.
On Sunday afternoon, a large group of individuals gathered outside the Holiday Inn Express in Rotherham. They threw wood and bottles at police officers while chanting “get them out” – referring to the 130 asylum seekers who have been staying at the hotel since 2022.
According to South Yorkshire police, a minimum of ten officers sustained injuries during confrontations with the rioters. The culprits smashed windows and ignited dumpsters near the structure before also starting a fire in its ground floor interior.
Several individuals were taken into custody, and the fire was put out in a brief period.
