After Argentina’s squad fell 2-0 in the fifth round of the South American qualifier for the 2026 World Cup earlier today, captain Lionel Messi took aim at an offensive gesture made by Uruguayan players.
Messi publicly denounced the impolite behaviour displayed by the Uruguayan players during the match at La Bombonera.
There were several fights during the game, with Manuel Ugarte of Uruguay and Rodrigo De Paul of Argentina resulting in a very heated exchange.
During the altercation, Ugarte was reportedly observed making an inappropriate gesture in De Paul’s direction.
Messi stated (via Albiceleste Talk) in his post-match interview that “I prefer not to say what I think about certain gestures.” However, these youth must be taught to show respect for their elders.
This was usually a very respectful, challenging, and intense game. They must acquire some knowledge.
