Mendy takes legal action against Man City for non-payment of wages

The Premier League champions will face legal action from former Manchester City defender Benjamin Mendy, who says he is owed millions of pounds in unpaid salary.

Accused of rape and sexual assault two years ago, Mendy will take City to an employment tribunal to recover what he says are “unauthorised deductions from wages.”

When his contract with City expired in June, the 29-year-old quit after being cleared on charges of attempted and actual rape.

It is claimed that following Mendy’s initial charges and detention, City ceased to pay him in September 2021.

A statement on behalf of Mendy told Sky Sports and The Guardian that “Nick De Marco KC… is acting for the former Manchester City player Benjamin Mendy in a multi-million-pound claim for unauthorised deductions from wages.”

“After Mr. Mendy was accused with multiple charges, all of which he was later found not guilty of, Manchester City FC refused to pay him any salaries whatsoever from September 2021 until the conclusion of his contract in June 2023. The employment tribunal will hear the claim.

Mendy was found not guilty on six charges of rape and one count of sexual assault in January; however, a retrial was necessary since the jury could not agree on two counts.

On those two counts, a jury in the retrial in July declared him not guilty.

Mendy, who reportedly received weekly compensation from City of about £100,000 ($125,000), is requesting his money back until the end of his deal with the triple champions.

Mendy, a three-time Premier League winner with City, left the team under Pep Guardiola in 2021 and began playing for the French club Lorient this season.
