Residents of Gaya in Kano State took to the streets on Sunday to voice their opposition to the dissolution of the Gaya Emirate by the state government.
The Gaya Emirate was one of the emirate councils that were recently dissolved by the Kano State Government, following the amendment of the Kano Emirates Council Law of 2019. This new law, enacted by the New Nigeria Peoples Party-controlled House of Assembly, reversed the law that former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje used in 2020 to create additional emirates and remove the 14th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II.
The dissolution of the emirate councils was finalized when Governor Abba Yusuf signed the amendment bill into law on Thursday. He also ordered the emirs of the affected emirates, including the Emir of Gaya, Aliyu Ibrahim Abdulkadir, to hand over their positions to Deputy Governor Abdulsalam Gwarzo, who oversees the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.
Residents reported that the dethroned emir left the palace at midnight on Thursday without any immediate signs of violence or resistance. Armed security personnel were present in the town to maintain order.

However, the situation escalated on Sunday morning when protesters took to the streets, carrying placards and chanting anti-government slogans. They accused the government of having political motives behind the dissolution and demanded the reinstatement of their emirate and the removed emir.
Abubakar Shuaibu, a resident of Gaya, expressed his discontent, stating, “Some people are not happy with this development. It feels like an injustice to our community.” Another protester, Aminu Abdullahi, claimed, “We see this as a political move to undermine our traditional institutions. The government should reconsider its decision and respect our cultural heritage.”

The protesters expressed their loyalty to the traditional leadership and called for the reinstatement of the Gaya Emirate. As of now, Governor Abba Yusuf has not responded to the protests. However, the government’s initial stance suggests that they are yet to address the concerns raised by the residents.
Background of Kano Emirates Dissolution
The Kano Emirates, a historic and culturally significant institution, recently faced a dramatic restructuring. The state government’s decision to dissolve the emirates and reassign territories has been met with resistance. Many believe this move undermines the traditional authority and disrupts the sociopolitical balance in the region.
Community Outrage and Public Demonstrations
In Gaya, the dissolution has been met with vehement opposition. Residents, including local leaders and youth groups, have organized mass protests. Chanting slogans and carrying banners, they have made their dissatisfaction clear. The protesters argue that the dissolution is an affront to their heritage and destabilizes the region’s governance structure.

Political Implications and Motivations
Analysts suggest that the dissolution of Kano Emirates is deeply rooted in political strategy. By restructuring the emirates, the government aims to weaken traditional power bases that might oppose its policies. This move is seen as an attempt to consolidate power and diminish the influence of longstanding cultural institutions.
Economic and Social Impact on Gaya
The dissolution’s impact extends beyond the political sphere. Economically, it threatens the livelihood of many who depend on the emirate system. Socially, it has created a rift, with communities divided over the government’s decision. This division is evident in the widespread protests, which show no sign of abating.
Government Response and Future Prospects
The government has maintained that the dissolution is in the best interest of the state, promising reforms and development initiatives. However, the public remains skeptical. The ongoing protests in Gaya and other affected areas indicate that the government’s reassurances have not quelled the unrest.
Call for Dialogue and Resolution
As tensions continue to escalate, there is a growing call for dialogue between the government and community leaders. Many advocate for a peaceful resolution that respects both the authority of the state and the cultural significance of the emirates. Without such dialogue, the protests are likely to persist, further destabilizing the region.
The dissolution of Kano Emirates has ignited a wave of protests in Gaya, reflecting deep-seated community concerns and political tensions. As the situation develops, the call for dialogue and a balanced resolution becomes increasingly urgent. The outcome of this conflict will significantly influence the future of traditional governance and political dynamics in the region.
