In tribute to the legendary Diego Maradona, his family has announced plans for a memorial site that will serve as a lasting homage to his impact on global football.

Diego Maradona’s children have announced the creation of a foundation to honor the football legend’s legacy, which will feature a memorial site in central Buenos Aires.

According to its official website, the “M10 Memorial” is set to open in 2025 in the tourist region of Puerto Madero and will have the capacity to accommodate one million visitors annually.

His daughter, Dalma Maradona, expressed during a presentation broadcast on YouTube Thursday: “We desire for our father to stay connected with the affection of the people and fulfill the wishes of everyone who wants to offer him a flower.”

Argentines can visit the 1,000-square-meter site for free. However, by donating to the Maradona Foundation, they have the opportunity to display their photo on a “heritage wall” at the memorial.

Dalma mentioned that the foundation, which she chairs along with four of Maradona’s children from different relationships, was established out of a wish to “honor him and preserve his legacy.”

Earlier this month, a court approved moving Maradona’s remains from the cemetery to a mausoleum at this future memorial site, allowing both locals and tourists to pay tribute to “Argentina’s great idol.”

Maradona passed away in November 2020 at the age of 60 while recuperating from brain surgery to address a blood clot. His death followed decades of struggling with addictions to cocaine and alcohol.

Two weeks after his surgery, he was discovered dead in bed. He had been staying in a rented house located in an exclusive Buenos Aires neighborhood where he went after being discharged from the hospital.

It was determined that he had died from a heart attack.

However, a court is also examining if potential negligence by Maradona’s medical team may have contributed to his death.
