Obasanjo asserts that numerous Nigerian leaders should face imprisonment, highlighting issues of corruption and mismanagement within the country’s leadership. His comments reflect ongoing concerns about governance and accountability.
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has expressed doubt about the integrity of Nigeria’s leaders, claiming that individuals occupying public offices ought to be imprisoned.
On Friday in Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State, he received six members of the House of Representatives who co-sponsored a bill on a single six-year term and rotation between the North. During their audience with him, he made his statement.
During the visit to the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, Ugo Chinyere, a former chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Downstream Petroleum led them.
He said, “To start with, we must introspect ourselves and examine our system. While it’s important to reassess our democracy, the individuals holding key governmental positions need a complete overhaul of their character. In my honest opinion, many in power should be imprisoned or even executed.”
Successive governments failed to build on the foundation laid by the former President during his tenure in office.
My main concern, regardless of whether we opt for a solitary six-year term or two terms spanning four years each, is the need to eradicate carbon from our way of thinking and outlook.
If he is granted a single term of six years, he can proceed with his malevolent plans just as if he had been given two terms of four years. The only distinction would be that these actions would occur over the course of six years instead of four, provided that he isn’t elected for another term in those subsequent four years.
According to Obasanjo, the issue at hand is not ours but our own selves. Unless we prioritize taking care of ourselves and change our mindset and approach towards governance – even if it means adopting different terms such as a single six-year term or a four-year term- nothing will improve.
