The World Cup has been ruled out for Senegal forward Sadio Mane after he hobbled off during Bayern Munich’s victory over Werder Bremen on Tuesday.
L’Equipe claims that after 20 minutes of Bayern’s decisive 6-1 triumph, Mane was forced off the field, giving Senegal a major World Cup scare.
The former Liverpool forward, who is expected to miss the competition in Qatar due to a tendon injury, will not participate for Senegal.
According to the report, Mane might miss “many weeks” of action.
When Dino Toppmoeller, an assistant coach for Bayern Munich, claimed that Mane’s leg injury was not “too significant” and that he should recover in time for the World Cup in Qatar, initial concerns were allayed.
“There is nothing too serious, and his participation in the World Cup should not be in peril,” Toppmoeller told reporters of Sadio Mane’s minor leg injury.
Aliou Cisse, the head coach of Senegal, has just days to announce his World Cup team, but Mane is crucial to his nation’s chances in the competition.
On November 21, Senegal will play their first Group A match against the Netherlands, followed by Ecuador and the hosts Qatar.
