In court on Wednesday, Cletus Gandu, a 40-year-old individual who was not employed and had no source of food confessed to stealing two yams out of hunger.
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) brought charges of criminal trespass and theft against Gandu.

“In order to alleviate my hunger, I resorted to stealing yams twice. Your Honors, I humbly request mercy,” Gandu pleaded with the Magistrates’ Court in Kafanchan, Kaduna State.
Michael Bawa, the presiding judge, accepted Gandu’s admission of guilt and set a sentencing date for August 6. Pending the hearing, Bawa instructed that Gandu be detained in custody.
The court was informed by NSCDC prosecutor Marcus Audu that Alice Daniel reported theft at the Kafanchan office on July 15. It was alleged by Audu that Gandu had stolen yams from Zonkwa farm belonging to Daniel twice.
Sections 327 and 270 of the Kaduna State Penal Code Law are violated by the offense.
