Man detained in Ogun for allegedly raping girl with Down syndrome
The police in Ogun State have detained 29-year-old Kunle Abati for allegedly raping a 27-year-old woman with Down syndrome.
The victim’s mother filed a report at the divisional headquarters in Ilese Ijebu, and on December 7, the person who did it was caught.
According to reports, the mother told police that she had left her daughter on an errand at around 7:30 am on the specified day and that when she got home, she found bloodstains on her clothes.
The mother claimed that when she questioned her daughter about the blood on her garment, the victim accompanied her to the home of the suspect and explained that the suspect had carnal knowledge of her. This was according to a statement made by the Ogun State Police image maker, Abimbola Oyeyemi.
Oyeyemi says that after the complaint, CSP Paul Omiwole, the DPO of Ilese Ijebu, told his men to go after the suspect, who was later caught.
Oyeyemi said on Saturday that during questioning, the suspect admitted to the crime and said that he also used the woman’s health issue to justify what he did before learning that she was a virgin.
He claimed that the ‘bleeding victim’ was swiftly transported to the Ijebu-Ode General Hospital for medical assistance.
Lanre Bankole, the commissioner of police, has in the meantime directed that the suspect be transferred to the State CIID’s Anti-Human Trafficking and Child Labor Unit for further investigation and thorough prosecution.
