Man Arrested for Allegedly Killing Brother Over Food Dispute in Anambra

Tragedy struck in Anambra as a man was arrested for allegedly killing his brother during a heated argument over food, sparking shock and outrage.

The Anambra State Police Command has detained 37-year-old Kosisochukwu Okafor on allegations of causing his elder brother Emmanuel Okafor’s death after a domestic dispute.

The unfortunate event occurred on Friday in Adegbe Village, Abagana, within Anambra State’s Njikoka Local Government Area. According to eyewitnesses, a dispute over the use of food items at home escalated into a violent confrontation.

An eyewitness reported, “After a heated argument, the younger brother used a stick to pierce his chest during their fight. The victim fell and was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead by the attending doctor.”

SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, confirmed that on Saturday. He said that officers from the Abagana Police Divisional Headquarters and local vigilante operatives apprehended the suspect around 7 p.m. on Friday.

Ikenga stated that on February 7, 2025, at around 7 p.m., police officers from the Abagana Police Divisional Headquarters and local vigilantes in Abagana arrested a man named Anthony Kosisochukwu Okafor. The arrest took place due to his alleged involvement in the death of his elder brother, Mr. Emmanuel Okafor. Anthony is 37 years old and resides in Adegbe Village, Abagana within Njikoka LGA; while Emmanuel was aged 45 years.

The suspect admitted to initiating a fight with the victim following an intense argument about household food supplies. Kosisochukwu allegedly used a stick to stab the deceased in the chest. The victim was taken to the hospital, where they were pronounced dead by the attending doctor.

Ikenga called the case deeply concerning, stressing the necessity of peaceful conflict resolution in families. He stated, “This incident is seriously unsettling and underscores how crucial it is to tackle domestic violence and family disputes effectively. It also highlights the importance of managing conflicts and emotions in a healthy and constructive manner to prevent irreversible consequences.”

The case has been moved to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department in Awka. Authorities have stated that once the investigation is complete, charges will be brought against the suspect in court.
