Malian Military Faction Demands Prime Minister’s Resignation
The group associated with junta leader Assimi Goita is insisting on Maïga’s resignation within 72 hours, accusing him of “high treason.” This demand carries weight because the CDM’s previous requests have frequently been acted upon by the junta.

Installed by the military in 2021 after Mali’s second coup within a year, Prime Minister Choguel Kokalla Maïga openly criticized the junta on November 16 during events commemorating the recapture of Kidal. Despite being a civilian, he appeared in military attire and expressed his dissatisfaction with being sidelined from crucial decisions, especially those concerning the country’s political transition timeline.
While praising the Malian Armed Forces (FAMa) for their efforts and celebrating the “liberation of Kidal,” Maïga offered a sharp critique of the junta’s governance. He emphasized the “urgent need for political clarity in Mali and a redirection of the transition,” cautioning against a “looming specter of confusion and misrepresentation” during this important time. Additionally, Maïga criticized the junta’s unilateral decision to postpone—without prior consultation with government officials—the end date of what was initially planned as March 26, 2024.
Maïga seems to be growing more isolated, with his influence over the military waning. Rumors of his potential dismissal have been circulating for months, particularly after he endorsed a critical document against the junta in June.
